At St. Agnes Home, we know that keeping one’s mind engaged and one’s body active is absolutely necessary for maintaining a balanced, healthy lifestyle. That is why, while highlighting the spiritual, we also strive to offer a wide variety of physical, social, and educational programs and events to suit the preferences of all.
From cooking demonstrations to Irish dance performances, from needlepoint to Wii sports, residents are bound to find plenty to pique their interest. Those who prefer intellectual stimulation enjoy our guest speakers who cover a wide range of topics, from travel and culture, to gardening technique, to the history and development of fencing. Our birthday parties, card games, Sunday coffee and doughnuts and Friday Happy Hours foster friendships and great socialization. Those who want to improve their flexibility and strength never miss our daily exercise program. Those that simply want to relax and enjoy some entertainment are delighted by frequent dance and music recitals performed by local groups as well as more renowned performers such as the St. Louis Symphony trombones and the Muny Kids.
One splendidly unique aspect to St. Agnes Home’s leisure and recreation agenda is the incorporation of weekly visits from the 2-5 year olds at the Sisters’ daycare center on the same campus, the Carmelite Child Development Center. The children love to play Legos or to color with the “grandmas and grandpas,” to entertain with songs and dancing, and to share their smiles and love. Some of our residents even spend time at the daycare reading books to the children and helping where they can, a beautiful intergenerational exchange.
Whether it’s a quick trip to the Kirkwood train station for custard cones or something a little more adventurous, such as riding among the deer and bison through Lone Elk Park, our scenic bus ride is a favorite activity for many. But that’s not the only traveling our residents do courtesy of St. Agnes Home. The Kirkwood library, the Muny, the Fox Theater, the Way of Lights tour and dinner at Our Lady of the Snows Shrine in Belleville, IL, the eagle show and chicken dinner at Pere Marquette Lodge, and the St. James Winery are just a handful of other destination spots that our residents enjoy from time to time.
It turns out our residents love to party…and so do the Sisters. Several times a year our social hall fills to overflowing as family and friends join their loved ones and the Sisters for extra special fun and entertainment. All ages delight in our annual Mardi Gras Ball which is sure to include the duck dance and the hokey-pokey. Our annual Christmas Pageant draws out the best in our residents, giving them an opportunity to show their talents, while providing a beautiful witness to unity as residents, family, Sisters, and staff come together to tell again the timeless story of the Birth of Christ. Of course, homemade Christmas treats from the St. Agnes Home bake kitchen follow. Our most extensive celebration, our annual Germanfest, is complete with a German spread of spätzle and rolatin, a German um-pa-pa band nearly 20 strong, lots of dancing, and…plenty of polkas!
