c. 900 BC The prophet Elijah, living on Mt. Carmel in the Holy Land, experiences God in a deep and personal way.  In turn, he instructs the first hermits of Mt. Carmel.
c. 1-33 AD Jesus lives
c. 4 St. Helena, Queen and Mother of Emperor Constantine, constructs the Basilica of Elijah in Palestine
c. 614 Persians invade Palestine, destroy the Basilica of Elijah- many Jews and Christians flee the Holy Land
1095-1291 The time of the Crusades
1155 St. Berthold, Italian priest-monk, settles with 10 ex-Crusaders on Mt. Carmel, living in the caves as hermits, like in the days of Elijah
c. 1190 Christian hermits living on Mt. Carmel construct and dedicate the first chapel to Our Lady-demonstrating the important Marian character of the Order
1206 The Brothers of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel receive a written rule from St. Albert of Jerusalem.  The rule embodies their understanding of the Elijahan prophetic tradition
c. 1238 Muslims in the Holy Land begin causing problems for the Carmelite Brothers living on Mt. Carmel.  The Carmelites begin moving all over Europe
1242 Sir Richard de Grey returns from the Crusades in the Holy Land and brings Carmelite brothers to England
1247 English Carmelite Simon Stock is elected Prior General
July 16, 1251 Our Lady of Mt. Carmel appears to St. Simon Stock and gives him the scapular promise: "Whosoever dies clothed with this habit shall be saved from eternal fire."
August 24, 1562 St. Teresa of Jesus begins her reform of Carmel.  She establishes the convent of St. Joseph, following the rule of Carmel "in its entirety and without mitigation" -the first of 17 Discalced Carmelite Convents and many Discalced Carmelite Friaries
c. 1890 St. Therese, the Little Flower, forms her "little way of perfection" in the Monastery of Lisieux
July 2, 1891 Mother Maria Teresa of St. Joseph founds the Carmelite Sisters of the Divine Heart of Jesus, putting the contemplative spirit of Carmel into the active service of the apostolate
